Preview: Fate is out of our hands (aka I wish terrible misfortune upon our rivals)

By: Luka | October 17th, 2009

It’s not a great situation to be in – on the one hand preparing for/anticipating what should be a routine victory against a mid table team that has very little to play for, and on the other praying for other teams to suffer cruel desolation (just one would do) in their also seemingly routine matches. It’s our fault we are in this situation in the first place (I’ve realised the folly in constantly blaming luck) and it’s up to us to make things right in the only way possible – beat the BoIS.

What: The penultimate round of the Superettan
Who: Assyriska v Landskrona BoIS
When: 3pm Sunday afternoon local time, 12am Monday morning Australia time, Sunday 6am U.S.A. – California time. Consult this for further reference.
Where: Sodertalje Arena
Why: The Promised Land (Allsvenskan) awaits us upon victory (sort of)

Us:
Since it’s our last home game of the season, the club (and it’s sponsors) are offering free entry to the match. As such, we can expect the biggest crowd of the season aside from the derby to watch us either blow yet another opportunity to escape the unglamourous surroundings of the Superettan and the black hole effect it seems to be having on us (we can’t escape it, 15 years and counting), or celebrate a wonderful day out in the sun horrible cold that is the impeding Swedish winter. Like I mentioned in my previous post, all other games are being played at the exact same time, so attentions will be split in thirds – 33.33% on our game, 33.33% on Sundsvall’s home game against Ljungskile and the same for Atvidabergs away to Vasalunds.

Since I really don’t know the official team news (lethargy on the part of the Assyriska site) let me distract you with an interview from our goalkeeper and perennial last-minute shot stopping saviour, Oscar Berglund. We find him ruefully cursing our tendency to ignominiously collapse late-on, building up the match as “make or break”, and reflecting very positively upon his time with Assyriska. Hopefully he’s enjoyed it so much that he will be convinced to sign for us permanently. Let’s all just assume everyone is available.

The Opposition

Landskrona BoIS, in mid table mediocrity, have nothing to play for other than pride (which can sometimes be the most dangerous of all causes). They have lost their last 3 matches and haven’t won in 5, yet before this bad streak were on a 3 match winning streak, such is the inconsistent and erratic nature of the teams in the Superettan this season. Other than Mjallby, and certainly including Assyriska, you just have no idea who is going to show up on any given day.

Here’s a great way to end this preview – highlights of our marvelous 3-1 victory away to the BoIS earlier in the season:

[goals: a second half hattrick from Tiago Pereira]

Tihe Assyriska.
