Angelholms 1-1 Assyriska: Luck was the prevailing force.
By: Luka | August 20th, 2009In the back of my mind, I sensed Angelholms had the potential to assume the role of the proverbial banana skin (and this has nothing to do with the colour of their jerseys). Their inconsistency, rather than their luminous kits, had me feeling this. We’d all like to face consistently poor teams, or consistently good teams – as you know what you’re going to get. Inconsistent teams on the other hand are perpetually scary. This proved to be the case tonight, as Assyriska confronted its worst enemy – a team as inconsistent as itself!
Now like I confessed, I couldn’t watch the match and I’m happy I didn’t. Firstly, I most certainly would have been writing this blog from the (dis)comfort of a hospital bed post a bout of mild (to severe) asphyxiation (I’ve always wanted to use that word). Secondly, C Sports screwed up royally again, with technical problems (i.e. gremlins) causing the first 30 minutes of the match to be missed (and if you were watching it from Australia, probably the rest of the match as well – thank you very much Australian broadband). So, as I didn’t watch the match, I am not going to pretend to sit here and analyse it (i’m toolazy honest for that).

*I think this photo, from some other game some other time against some other opponent, sums it all up really.
Goals:
1-0 Andi Toompuu 33′
1-1 Daniel Johansson 90′
Lineup:
Berglund
Batan, Conateh, Bergman, Samuelsson
Besara, Toompuu, Ostlundh, Furuseth
Moussa, Llumnica
Substitutions:
Narsai Shaba (66′ for Besara)
Mattias Genc (73′ for Llumnica)
Kristoffer Näfver (80′ for Furuseth)
Luckily, we managed to draw 1-1. What is that I hear you say? Bizarre? Ironic? I know, it’s crazy to describe a 1-1 draw when the opposition equalises in the 90th minute as ‘lucky’, per se. However, the bottom line from the reports I have read is that Assyriska were totally outclassed, dominated, beaten off the park and any other synonym or deviation you could think of. Had it not been for Andi Toompuu’s goal, a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Oscar Berglund (from my slanted Assyriska perspective of course, I’m sure Angelholms may have had some good players as well) and downright luck, we could have lost by some margin.
Here is the official Assyriska website’s match report via google translate for your discretionary reading pleasure (now you know how I feel!).
Post-match reactions
Assyriska:
Coach Robert Johansson - “We must be extremely happy with a point.”
Agonisingly close to being the decisive match-winner with a goal from the counter attack (and probably our only attack), Andi Toompuu, admitted that it was a “heavy game for us”, and despite not being in it at all from the beginning, we almost managed to keep a clean sheet. Coach Robbo affirmed that Angelholms were much the better team, particularly in the beginning of the match, and they could have won the match with a pair of goals very early on. He then pensively alluded to the short recovery time afforded between matches as a cause of fatigue and the reason for the lack of energy demonstrated by most of Assyriska’s players.

Angelholms:
A random Angelholms source – “It would seem to a oteknisk mittback to get the ball” (indeed, you won’t find me arguing about that). Midfielder and occasional 90th minute dream crusher Daniel “Lappen” Johanssen (pictured coming on with 5 minutes left, 5 minutes before ruining my morning) said ‘it was one of those days the ball did not want to go in.’ It did eventually, though at the worst possible time for both teams.
Final Mumblings (for now…)
Today (or yesterday, or who bloody knows), Assyriska met its match in terms of being the most frustratingly ineffective team in front goal. Angelholms seemed to be on a mission to take this mantle off Assyriska and must be commended for their valiant efforts. In the end, we have temporarily overtaken GIF Sundsvall into 3rd place with this draw (and thus a play-off spot for promotion). The team whom Aziz now calls home play Mjallby later today (or tomorrow etc depending on where you are and when you read this). Hopefully Mjallby continues playing like Mjallby and Mjallbies (my new word for “beat” or “win”) Sundsvall.
Our next match is a straight-forward home match against Qviding (I bet it isn’t pronounced how we all think it would be at first glance). Nevertheless, expect the unexpected.
