A post for the sake of posting.
By: Luka | October 2nd, 2009Step one of the grand emergency response plan: check. We won the derby, which on top of being the biggest game of the season, brought us the precious 3 points. Already in the players’ minds before the derby was the knowledge that both GIF Sundsvall and Falkenbergs failed to win. This sets up an almighty dash for the line to end the Superettan. As the cliche’ goes, every match is now a final. The only negative to emerge from an almost perfect day (other than this) is that bookings to Eddie Moussa, Andi Toompuu and Lamine Conateh mean they are suspended for our next game. In hindsight maybe Eddie’s off-the-ball incident was a little foolish, despite the entertainment value and given the circumstances, overwhelming temptation he must have been feeling. Abating this will be the return of Petter Furuseth and potentially Stefan Batan.
The table.
So, just a simple glance in conjunction with the fixtures tells us that we must win our last 4 games to secure a promotion-playoff against 3rd from bottom in the Allsvenskan. Second place and an automatic promotion spot is pretty much impossible. This potential promotion play-off will almost certainly be against either Hammarby or Djurgardens – both teams from Stockholm, and both massive clubs with illustrious histories meaning a playoff against either would be gigantic (and probably hard). It also means that the Superettan will most likely have another Mjallby next year.
Moving along, you can see that our chief obstacle is GIF Sundsvall who, in the greatest piece of irony ever, will play the self-haters aka the pseudo-ethnics aka Confused Assyrians FC. The conflicting emotions in that game will be intriguing. Do they play to beat Sundsvall, knowing very well that despite themselves being in an excellent position to be promoted, Assyriska would actually benefit more? Or do they cynically allow Sundsvall to win, thus ending their hopes yet all but ending ours as well? Like I said, intriguing. A draw would sit nicely for Assyriska I should add. But but but but…..we MUST win our next game. This next game is against Vasby, who are 11th in the 16 team Superettan but only 3 points above a relegation playoff spot. As such, they will be fired up. A full preview will (should) follow tomorrow.

You can see the rest of the photos from the derby and all the related events at Zelge.com and the official Assyriska site.
Also just go to youtube, search for “Assyriska” and sort the results by “latest” to find all the videos recently uploaded about the derby celebrations. Or don’t.
Finally, the investigation into the fire is still ongoing. The latest suspect is a recently-paroled leprechaun expat from Northern Ireland.
Conny Karlsson, you are just a few games away from becoming the greatest manager in Assyriska’s history.
Tihe Assyriska!
